HDFC RuPay Credit Card: Benefits, Fees, Eligibility and Which One to Pick (2026)

A friend asked me last week, "Which HDFC card should I take so I can pay by UPI?" It sounds like a simple question. But HDFC now has more than half a dozen RuPay cards, and they reward very different things. So this guide explains the HDFC RuPay credit card range in plain words: what each card costs, what it pays back, and which one makes sense for you.

Facts checked on 24 October 2026 against HDFC Bank's RuPay credit card page. Fees, rewards and offers change often, so confirm them on the application screen before you apply.

What Is an HDFC RuPay Credit Card?

RuPay is India's own card network, run by NPCI, the same body behind UPI. Since 2022, RBI has allowed RuPay credit cards to be linked to UPI apps. That means you can scan any shop's QR code and pay from your credit limit instead of your bank balance.

Visa and Mastercard credit cards can't do this. So if you want to pay by UPI and still get interest-free days and rewards, you need a RuPay card. An HDFC RuPay credit card is simply one of HDFC's cards issued on the RuPay network. Most of them work exactly like the Visa versions, plus UPI.

The HDFC RuPay Credit Card Options in 2026

HDFC's RuPay page lists these cards for new customers at the time of writing. The fees below are joining or annual fees, plus GST.

Freedom RuPay (₹500)

This is a good everyday card if you order food and cabs often. It gives 10X CashPoints on BigBasket, BookMyShow, OYO, Swiggy and Uber, up to 2,500 CashPoints a month. Everything else earns 1 CashPoint per ₹150. One catch, though: a CashPoint is worth only about ₹0.15, so the real return is lower than "10X" sounds.

Tata Neu Plus HDFC (₹499)

If you shop on Tata apps like BigBasket, Croma or Tata CLiQ, this one pays in NeuCoins. You get 2% back on Tata Neu and partner brands and 1% elsewhere. It also gives up to 500 NeuCoins a month on eligible UPI spends and four domestic lounge visits a year.

IndianOil HDFC (₹500)

This card is built for people who drive a lot. It earns 5% as Fuel Points at IndianOil pumps, on groceries and on bill payments. HDFC says you can get up to 50 litres of free fuel a year.

IRCTC HDFC (₹500)

Frequent train travellers should look here. It gives 5 reward points per ₹100 on IRCTC bookings and 8 free IRCTC Executive Lounge passes a year. Booking trains through SmartBuy also earns 5% cashback.

Shoppers Stop HDFC (₹299)

This is the cheapest of the lot, and it only makes sense if Shoppers Stop is your regular store. It earns First Citizen points there and a smaller rate elsewhere.

Pixel Play and Pixel Go

These are HDFC's app-based cards, managed inside PayZapp. Both pay 1% back on UPI. We have a full Pixel Go review if you want a simple first card.

The ₹99 HDFC UPI RuPay Credit Card

You may have seen ads for an HDFC RuPay card with a ₹99 fee. That is the HDFC Bank UPI RuPay Credit Card. It pays 3% CashPoints on groceries, supermarkets, dining and PayZapp, 2% on utility bills and 1% on other spends. Each of those three levels stops at 500 CashPoints a month.

However, there is a catch most ads skip. HDFC says only existing HDFC credit card customers can apply for it. It is a virtual add-on that shares the limit of your current HDFC card. So if you don't have an HDFC card yet, start with one of the cards above. Then you can add the UPI RuPay card later.

Also, the points are worth about ₹0.25 each. So the 3% headline works out to roughly 0.75% in real money. For example, ₹15,000 a month on groceries earns 450 CashPoints, which is about ₹112.

HDFC RuPay credit card: how to pick the right one

HDFC RuPay Credit Card Eligibility and Documents

Every card has its own income bar, so check the exact number on the application screen. As a rough guide, you need to be 21 to 60 years old if salaried, or 21 to 65 if self-employed. Most entry cards want a steady monthly salary of about ₹25,000, or an ITR above ₹6 lakh a year if you run a business. A CIBIL score of 750 or more makes approval much easier.

Keep these ready before you start: your PAN card, Aadhaar, your last three salary slips or bank statements, and a recent photo. Also, use the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar, because the eKYC depends on it. Our step-by-step application guide walks through every screen.

Which HDFC RuPay Credit Card Should You Pick?

Start with where your money actually goes each month. If most of it is Swiggy, Uber and BigBasket, the Freedom RuPay fits best. If you live in the Tata apps, the Tata Neu Plus pays more. For fuel, take the IndianOil card, and for train trips, the IRCTC card.

On the other hand, if you just want one simple card for UPI, Pixel Go is the easiest. And if you already hold any HDFC credit card, add the ₹99 UPI RuPay card on top for 3% on groceries and dining.

What to Watch Out For

First, rent, fuel (on most cards), wallet loads, EMI and government payments usually earn nothing. Second, interest on HDFC cards is around 3.6% a month if you don't pay in full, which wipes out any reward. So always pay the full bill by the due date.

Also, UPI on a credit card works only for paying shops and merchants. You can't send money to a friend from it. Our UPI guide covers the rules and the common errors.

Final Word

An HDFC RuPay credit card is worth having today, mainly because it turns every UPI payment into a card payment with rewards and interest-free days. Just pick the card that matches your biggest spend, not the one with the loudest ad. If you're unsure which network to choose, read our RuPay vs Visa comparison next.
